The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Classroom Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.


Audience

This course is for healthcare professionals: nurses, doctors, medical assistants, dentists, dental assistants, who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

Course Format

Initial Provider Course requires approximately 4.5 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing. Renewal Course requires approximately 4 hours, including skills practice and skills testing.

•Key‎ changes in basic life support, reflecting the new science from the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care •Critical concepts of high-quality CPR •The American Heart Association Chain of Survival •1-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant •2-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant •Differences between adult, child and infant rescue techniques •Bag-mask techniques for adult, child and infant •Rescue breathing for adult, child and infant •Relief of choking for adult, child and infant •CPR with an advanced airway

Certification

American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Course Completion Card is valid for two years.

In the classroom, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice and skills testing. Students also complete a written exam


If you complete the course at the Heart CPR Step by Step, cards will be issued the same day.

This course is for healthcare professionals: nurses, doctors, medical assistants, dentists, dental assistants, who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital setting.

The American Heart Association’s BLS for Healthcare Providers Online Part 1 Course, web-based and accessible 24 hours a day, provides a flexible alternative to classroom training. Through case-based scenarios, interactive activities and videos, this course teaches the concepts of both single-rescuer and team basic life support.

Part 1 must be paired with a hands-on skills practice and testing session (Parts 2 and 3) with an AHA BLS Instructor. Students who successfully complete Part 1 receive a certificate that allows them entrance to a skills practice and testing session. An AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers course completion card will be issued upon successful completion of all three parts. Skills check off included with class.
